So I haven't posted a huge amount of fic here lately but I'm posting the link on AO3 to the one I've just posted because I think it's worth commemoration...

This fic? Puts me over the TWO MILLION WORDS mark on AO3.

Which, yes, it's not all the fic I've written, there's a hell of a lot on the old Band Gazebo site which has now vanished off the internet (but is all on a hard drive, waiting to be uploaded if I ever get around to it) so I know there's tonnes more words published by me out there.

But for once I'm unashamedly blowing my own trumpet here!

Answers to some of the fandom meme-

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
The first that I went to cons for was Star Trek The Next Generation. The first one that I got into online fandom wise, and posted fic for and so on, I'm fairly sure was Stargate SG1. I lurked in other fandoms, don't get me wrong, but that was the one that kicked it all off.

2. What is your latest fandom?
Oh man, the last thing I expected. During the summer, the Daily Fail had an article online, "The Flying Doctors : Where Are They Now" and I used to love that show, smiley-b and I watched it all the time, though she was the one who taped it and all that. Anyway, fast forward almost 30 years and I read this and I'm nostalgic and I'm doing an online summer course so I'm killing time so of course I go to see if any of it is up on YouTube and find the since deleted holy grail of all nine seasons. Plummeting headlong down the rabbit hole, I am reminded of my love for Doctor Tom Callaghan and am reminded of him and Chris and the friends/colleagues to lovers, the broken heart when he left, the UST when he came back and the joyous moment that when both came back for the reunion episode, they got back together. Off camera. Still bitter. But! One Million Words were then doing the July Pool Party, where you play in a fandom you've never participated in before. I therefore wrote the getting back together missing scene. And I've written a scandalous amount of stuff for them in the weeks since. And it's a dead fandom but it's closed canon so I'm calling it a win but it makes me happy so I don't care.

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
SG1 will always have a special place in my heart but best ever is West Wing. The amount of fic that was around in that fandom, for canon pairs and rare pairs and gen stuff and everything was all amazing. So many talented authors, and it didn't matter what pairing you wrote for (I wrote for a lot of them) everyone was, to my recollection anyway, so friendly and supportive and made the experience amazing. I still miss those days.

So I decided to drop out of the Het Big Bang for this year. It's been a pretty shite year at work which sapped a lot of my mojo for anything longer than a comment fic piece and the 9k of words that I have will never be stretched to 25k by the end of August. Which sucks because I hate dropping out of things, I love the Het Big Bang challenge and I actually know exactly how I want the story to go - it's just that every time I sit down to write anything on it, my brain goes "Nope" and I end up staring at a blank screen.

On the other hand, I started a completely different fic yesterday, just writing out a snippet of something that came into my head and I now have *checks word counter* 7,127 words of angsty fluffy plot with a few other scenes in my head that will need to be written to make it work as an actual fic that makes sense and stuff. The irony that I could have just pulled a switcheroo and declared this for the Het Big Bang Mini Bang option is not lost on me, alas I had already filled out the poll by the time I realised that I'd written 5000 words in 12 hours. Plus it's a literal fandom of two, but hey it is making me happy and not much has done that this year so yeah.
helsinkibaby: (worfwrite)
I never usually do the 1_million_words pool party challenge because I can usually never find a fandom I've never written anything in. But a fortuitous "Where are they now" newspaper article sent me on a google search which sent me down a rabbit hole where I was reminded that old fandoms never really die, they just get uploaded on to YouTube where they can live forever.

So this is set during the season nine episode "The Good Book" aka The One Where Everybody Comes Back to Cooper's Crossing and we get our Tom and Chris reunion which happens off screen and I am forever bitter. As is smiley_b, who encouraged this insanity.

Yesterday I missed the showings of West Wing on Sky Atlantic so missed the glorious return of Sam Seaborn. Which I still have issues about. I mean, I get not wanting to blow the Rob Lowe reveal at the same time as everyone else who returned for "Requeim," and I love the callback to "Two Gunmen" with Josh pulling Sam out of a board meeting. But for me, and I have said this for 11 years, there is nothing, short of a full body cast, that would have prevented Sam being at Leo's funeral. And even then, he would have convinced someone to get him there AMA.

Today was " Instituitional Memory" and "Tomorrow" - I still love Kate and Will and one day will write the fic where she follows him to Oregon and they make a go of it. Because I have it written in my head! The CJ and Danny stuff really works for me and I love the Santos/Helen relationship, the banter between them the morning of the inauguration was super.

I got teary at several points during the finale, especially when Bartlet was doing his little walk around. And during his goodbye with CJ. And when CJ and Josh were in Leo's office, and during Mallory's last little look around before she left.

However, the scene at the end, where Jed unwraps the gift and it's the napkin? Big ugly cry. Huge big ugly cry, even after all these years.

Random blathering to make a post...

The West Wing season seven, and more especially "Election Day part one" - it was on here on Sky Atlantic a couple of days ago and I ended up watching it again. I'd forgotten the cuteness of all the hook ups between the Santos campaign at the start, and the wonder that was the "AT LAST!" of Josh and Donna. But am I the only person who, when Annabeth starts walking down the corridor at the end, turns it off? Because I watched it to the end when it aired but I've turned it off every time since!

In a similar note, I watched part two with breakfast this morning. And cried. You'd think eleven years would make it easier but no!

In more recent tv news, I'm catching up on The Flash and ok, fine, I accept that my favourite Joe is not of the desired demographic and post Barry's trip to the future they all have only one thing in mind. But nobody, not one person has referenced the CAPTAIN Joe West of the ticker? I thought that it might be just that Cisco/Barry hadn't paid attention to that part of it but then in the start of "Attack on Gorrila City" there are several close ups of Barry, board in full view behind him, Cpt Joe West writ clear as day on it! Does no one care that Joe is apparently in for a promotion? Or is no one worried about how Singh might vacate his office to facilitate such a promotion? Just me then? Ok.

Meant to post yesterday about Sherlocky stuff but went to bed at 6.15 with a migraine. Oh well.

And then, tonight I had a Board of Management meeting (the curse of seniority, let me tell it to you) and I get home and find out Miguel Ferrer has passed away? Oh man, I had heard the rumours but I was hoping they were just that. I really have grown to love Granger on NCIS LA, he's got a dry snark that I really appreciate. He's going to be missed, no doubt.

Day 06

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Sweet Christmas, if there was ever a post that I hate to write, this is it. I am not good at asking for things. I don't even ask my husband for things for my birthday/Christmas because I am so bad at it. And this is when he actually asks me what I'd like and I still can't do it!!!

However. I will try.

1. Joe West. Not that I want an actual Joe West, though obviously I would not say no. But he's my favourite on The Flash - not a word of a lie, Jesse is the reason I watched in the first place - and I think mostly because the demographic of the show skews more towards the Barry/Iris/Cisco age group, most of the fandom doesn't seem to be as interested in him. (Yes, this is my way of saying I am old. Certainly fandom old). I need more fandom stuff related to him. Now I ship him with Caitlin which, of course, is a ship of one, (maybe less than half a dozen if the AO3 comments/kudos are anything to go by) but ship is not my be all and end all. (Especially since the Joe/Cecile things I wrote got barely more views than the Joe/Caitlin ones.)
But yes, Joe. Give me fic, give me icons. Make them Joe on his own, Joe/Cecile or Joe/Caitlin. But more Joe, please!

2. I miss being active on LJ/DW and chatting to people about fannish stuff. And non fannish stuff. So I'm hoping to be more active this year and would love new journals to read and communities to follow. So if anyone knows anything based on my interests or wants to friend me, go ahead!!!

3 . Fic or fic recs for any of the following pairs - Molly/Lestrade (Sherlock) , Diggle/Felicity (Arrow) , Luke Cage/Claire Temple (Luke Cage etc etc) ... I am trying to think of other pairings I like and cannot think of any, not because there aren't any but because my mind has gone blank. Basically, if it's a rare pair, I'm probably going to ship it because that's how my mind works so if there is anything out there, let me know!

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Fandom: Sleepy Hollow
Title : Shoqued
Author : Ambrosia Jones
Link : http://archiveofourown.org/works/3260720
So, back before Sleepy Hollow did the thing they did that killed the show in my and many other fans mind, there was this epic fic that explored the backstory of Abbie and Jenny's dad. As with so much in season three, I would argue that this is better than the show. It also has a little Frank/Jenny thrown in ( yet another thing the show done missed the boat on, as well as effing up Frank's storyline in general) and Daddy Mills is fancast as Dennis Haysbert. Now, James McDaniel, I love you, but face it, DENNIS HAYSBERT!!!

Fandom: Sherlock
Title: An Avalanche of Detour Signs
Author : gyzym
Link : http://archiveofourown.org/works/340976
Written before season three aired but fits in with canon up to them. Also resolves that cliffhanger better than the show did. It's over 50000 words of Molly Hooper fic, showing the first two seasons and more through her eyes and she falls in love with our favourite Detective Inspector along the way. It's beautiful and angsty and heartbreaking and perfectly in character and if you like Molly/Lestrade, you will never need to read another fic again after this.

Fandom: Luke Cage
Title: Night Nurse
Author : igrockspock
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/8819638
It is a mystery to me that after Luke Cage aired, there were not shed loads of Luke/Claire fic on AO3. (I side eye the fact that there is more Shades/Mariah up there. I side eye hard.) This is a lovely look at what Claire does post season one and it's a lot more than sit around and wait for Luke.

Fandom: Arrow
Title: Knight in Shining Armour
Author : SmoakScreen
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3132662
Because Diggle/Felicity is the rare pair to end them all and this is awesome. Bodyguard AU where they're perfectly in character.

Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I saw this and said "changed my life"? Nothing's ever affected me that profoundly.

Then I thought.

Stargate SG1 was the first fandom that I got into online. I started watching the show in the year 2000 and the first ep I saw was Holiday which was a hoot because let's face it, I love a good body swap episode. (I love a bad body swap episode but that's another story). Knowing nothing about the relationships, I was convinced Sam and Daniel were a couple (sample dialogue - "come on, Daniel, you can't die on me now," to which a 'comatose' Daniel replies "It's nice to know you don't just like me for my looks" -- I have shipped for SO much less!) and was shocked when they weren't. An Internet search led me to the old Statisical Outliers site where I first encountered / met neonhummingbird and I joined mailing lists (back in the day, y'all!) for Sam/Daniel where I met other like minded people. It's also where I first posted fanfic, and read all of the Sam/Daniel stuff I could get my hands on. (We were a small crew, but when I think back on some of the doc written... Man, we were good! I mean of course, other people. Not me. *puts away my own trumpet*)

In 2000, I went to London for the SG2 con and after that, on the mailing lists, discovered that one of the girls from it had also been at the con. We, as well as two others from the list, all met up at SG3 the following year and did a lot more SG cons together in the years since. We don't meet up as much any more but when we do, it's always great fun and like no time has passed at all.

And of course, it was at one of those SG cons that I met my husband! We'll be married 9 years in June and our little girl just turned seven.

So there you have it - the fandom that changed my life.

So the challenge for today was 3 self recs. Which usually not my thing to do but hey ho. One of these is from 2015, the other two were both written in 2016 which it is still too early in the day to be calling last year! All three are from The Flash

Title: lost somewhere between now and then
Fandom : The Flash
Pairing: Joe West/Mama West (not Francine!)
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/4963756

This was written between season one and two, before we knew anything about Francine and not to toot my own horn or anything but I prefer my story to the one they used in the show. This draws slightly from the comic arcs (which I haven't read, only seen referenced on message boards, so any mistakes are mine and don't go expecting total fidelity), features a quite out of character Rip Hunter (also written before LOT aired) and bounces between two timelines. I like the ending which might be the only bit that does fit in with the show continuity!

Title: Central City on the Edge of Forever
Fandom: The Flash
Pairing: Joe West/Caitlin Snow
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/7822975

This was my 2016 Het Big Bang and I love it so much. The premise came about when I wondered what would happen if Joe and Caitlin were the same age. Which led me to throwing Caitlin back in time 20 years through never explained hand wavey science and seeing what happened. People commented that they didn't expect the ending to be what it was, but in a good way, and I think that's one of my favourite parts of the story - I did intend to do something else with the ending but couldn't figure it out and then I thought "what if" and it changed the whole story, opened it up to Het Big Bang type proportions. The title is a play on the Classic Star Trek episode which i came up with after hearing a throwaway line in the season three finale of Sleepy Hollow, of all things. So at least one good thing came out of that clusterfuck.

Title: Dance You Into The Dawn
Fandom: The Flash
Pairing: Joe West/Caitlin Snow
Link : http://archiveofourown.org/works/8282906

On comment fic, a request was made for a Strictly Come Dancing AU and it was made on opening weekend when I was all Strictly-fied and also, and no-one believes me when I say this, but I have all my songs picked out for if I were ever to be on the show, I have a playlist on my iPod and after watching skating for years, hearing music and seeing dancing/skating is second nature to me. So sketching out a fic where I have Joe as a singer and Caitlin as a pro dancer was very easy because I could find songs for each dance fairly easily and then it was a matter of finding the story to go along with it. I was off work for nearly three weeks with a chest infection that would not quit when I was writing this and it may have saved my sanity a little.
