29 What movie, book, or TV episode makes you cry without fail? (Or get wibbly, if you're not a crier.)

As jaqofspades reminded me when I read her entry, the last thing I looked at that made me sob was the Farewell Finn episode of Glee because of the circumstances and the performances and Romy Rosemont who absolutely deserves an Emmy for the scene she did.

However, my bulletproof answer, the one that I can't think of without hurting even all these years later, is the Babylon 5 finale, Sleeping in Light -- it aired over here over New Year's and I was away and looked at the last three episodes in a row on my own, thank goodness, because by the end I was just hysterical. The goodbye scene between Sheridan and Delenn had me full on ugly crying (and I'd cried already) and the last speech by Ivanova...

An expedition to Coriana space found Sheridan's ship a few days later, but they never found him. All the airlocks were sealed, but there was no trace of him inside. Some of the Minbari believe he'll come back some day, but I never saw him again in my lifetime.

Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future, and it changed us.

It taught us that we had to create the future, or others will do it for us. It showed us that we have to care for each other – because if we don't, who will? And that strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely of places.

Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope that there can always be new beginnings, even for people like us.

As for Delenn.... Every morning for as long as she lived, Delenn got up before dawn and watched the sun come up.

BRB, bawling.

30 We started the month with something funny. Send us off with something else that tickles your funny bone!

From the sublime to the ridiculous...

Brendan O'Carroll is a very well known Irish comedian whose series Mrs Brown's Boys has done really well on the BBC. He plays Agnes Brown, the stereotypical Irish mammy and I cry laughing at most of the episodes. The scene where Agnes accidentally takes some LSD and ends up running around the house impersonating a horse while dressed as Wonder Woman -- I was in pain from laughing so hard.

28 What fandom and/or ship do you Just Not Get that everyone else seems to love?

There are a few fandoms fitting the bill, Supernatural probably being the obvious. But the fandom/ship I really Just Don't Get right now is Hawaii Five-0. The Steve/Danny ship, while I can see why people ship it, I don't get how people look at the show and say it's all about the Steve/Danny and throw flaming brickbats at anyone who might say "Well, no", let alone anyone who dares defend the character of Catherine. (Sidebar- there are many reasons to headdesk at Michelle Borth's twitter antics, just as there are many reasons to grind your teeth about the writing for her character. However, I'm talking about the people who hated her for no other reason than she is Steve's girlfriend and would hate her even if she spewed sunshine and rainbows on twitter and was the best written female ever.)

I don't get how you can watch something and yet hate on it so much. I really don't.

24 What's a special tradition in your family that makes the holiday season special to you?

On Christmas Eve, we always go to my parents' house. We lived beside my nana (Dads mum) growing up so all his family would end up there at some stage on Christmas Eve, then come over the wall to us. Even though Nana's gone now, they still do. Christmas morning, we go over there too - English husband who's a nurse so no Christmas hols equals no fight over where we spend the day - and there's some of Dads family there after Mass, then my mums nieces come over with their husbands and kids, then we head out to visit my mums brother before we come back and have dinner. It's the same every year and for me it's the best part of Christmas. (Though seeing Nimoy last year was stiff competition for it!)

25 We're on a roll with the holiday stuff. So… what's your favorite holiday movie or TV episode?

I'm going with the classic It's a Wonderful Life - we've watched it the last couple of Christmas Eves and it's just perfect. Interestingly enough, a lunch today, one of the girls said she heard they're planning It's a Wonderful Life 2 based on his daughter as an old woman... My reaction, and everyone else's was a shudder and "No!"

26 It's officially one month till Christmas! Post your favorite holiday song.

Can't link to it on my phone but love Kathy Mattea's There's a new kid in town.

27 What's a TV show you don't particularly like anymore, but still watch for some reason? Why? (If you're smarter than most of us, which show did you want to love, but gave up on?)

I have none of the former - my tv time is limited these days so there's no such thing as filler! For the latter, I'm sorry but probably Supernatural - I tried and tried but it just never grabbed me.

23 The holidays are coming. Which means good food. Share a recipe for a dish you love to enjoy during the Merry Thanksmas season. (So we can enjoy it too!)

Since we always decamp to my parents' house for Christmas, I'm not much of a Christmas cook. However, this is my I-would-rise-in-the-night-to-eat-it recipe.

22 Tell us about the obscure fandom/ship you love that you wish there was MOAR fic for. (Or any fic at all.)

Oh sweet Jesus, all of them!

Definitely Mike/Debra from The Following because they took me over for a good long while this year. And Pete/Myka from Warehouse 13 which is the red-headed stepchild of ships there, it would appear.

I'd really love for there to be more of a Fame fandom, and there are so many ships I could sail on've got your canon Nicole/Jesse, your uncon Nicole/Leroy, the would-have-been-canon-if-the-show-continued Reggie/Ian, the ship-that-should-have-been Bruno/Doris, and I'm sorry but if that show aired now, especially season six, there would be more Ian/Jesse slash than I can shake a stick at!

21 What about LJ keeps you coming back? (Because let's be honest. This place is old. BUT WE ALL LOVE IT ANYWAY. WHY???)

Honestly? Because it's my fandom home.

I have been here for over ten years, that's a lot of memories invested here. I love the format, even when DDOS attacks mean you can't get into it for ages. I love my user pics and how I have more than I could ever possibly use. I love the people here, new and old, and I love how familiar it is. I'm not a great one for moving on to the shiny new thing just because it's the shiny new thing.

I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and LJ ain't broke for me yet.

I've been meaning to link this since I tracked it down since seeing it in tumblr - it's for fandom but it rings true for my LJ experience as well.

Fandom was/is just a phase. Fandom could never be just a phase. Fandom is where you found a friend, a sister, a kindred spirit. Fandom is where you found a talent, a love, a reason. Fandom is where you found yourself.

Go read - it's awesome.

20 Who is your favorite sidekick?

You mean I have to choose one? C'mon, if you've been around my LJ for any length of time, you'll know my love of sidekicks/anyone but the lead is a real and true thing. This is hard!

At the moment, I'll go with Mike Weston from The Following (he had me at "mint?") and his twin brother, Steve Jinks from Warehouse 13.

Other perennial favourites are Daniel Jackson Stargate SG1, Sarah Jane Smith and Martha Jones Doctor Who and Kimball Cho from The Mentalist. (One day I WILL write the AU which deals with the original character breakdown, ie where he is married!)

19 What about fandom drives you crazy sometimes?

The hatred and the intolerance.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic and remembering things differently to how they really were, but back in the day, it seemed to me like there was a lot less bashing and insulting going on. Maybe it was just where I hung out, mostly mailing list based where you joined based on your interests and there was no point in joining an opposing one just to troll...well, maybe people did but I don't remember any. I never really participated in message boards (FSU the exception) so maybe there was more of it there? But even in Stargate fandom, I mean, we Sam/Daniel fans knew the Sam/Jack fans thought we were nuts but the lists I was on, we just got on with things and did our thing and we were happy. And good lord, the West Wing fandom, my circles anyway, was a veritable smorgasbord of multishipper heaven!

But now you've got hate on all sides. I can't mention liking your least favourite character without an attack; God forbid anyone should mess with your ship or your favourite. The Hawaii Five-0 fandom is lethal for hating anything that's not Steve/Danny (and while I'm not denying that Michelle Borth has not covered herself in glory via twitter, the relentless hatred that she gets, and has done since she appeared on screen, isn't right either.) Warehouse 13, what with the Bering/Wells shippers and some stuff that's online about the final 6 eps and the finale in particular, is heading down the same path. (Don't want to go into too much detail because spoilers.)

End of the day, fandom is my happy place. My escape. I have a job and a house and a marriage and a daughter and a million things going on that stress me out, I want to come online and enjoy my fandoms with people who enjoy them, or who don't know what the hell I'm on about but are willing to go "good on you!"

I don't have the time or the patience for the hate.

Here endeth the rant.

18 Share your favorite fandom places/sites outside of LJ.

Wow...mind gone blank.

I like tumblr for the pretty pictures and AO3 for the fic - I'm helsinkibaby on both, if you didn't know!

I like Television Without Pity for TV stuff, not so much the recaps necessarily but the forums are good for letting me know what's going on without spoiling me for every little detail. (And since I'm waiting on Sky for lots of my shows, that's good).

FSUniverse message board gives me my skating needs. The "off the beaten track" forum has also often broken news to me!

Speaking of the above, I fall in and out of love with twitter but I am on it, even if I only occasionally post there. Can you guess my user name?!

17 \What song(s) always reminds you of that One Fandom Moment? (Link us to the musics!)

I wracked my brain on this one, let me tell you, and then finally it came to me.

The show was 21 Jump Street. In the season four episode Come from the Shadows, Doug Penhall, class clown, falls in love with an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Marta. So she won't get deported, they marry, and the authorities believe it's an marriage of convenience (which it's not, not really) and they deport her. When she goes back to El Salvador, Marta vanishes and, later in the season when Doug travels to El Salvador to find her, we learn that she's been killed.

There's a beautiful montage that shows them falling in love and being damn adorable and it's set to "Fragile" by Sting and every time I hear this song, I think of Doug and Marta.

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
How fragile we are how fragile we are

I think the ep is on YouTube, when I'm on the computer, I'll link it.

16 What are your favorite doomed ships? Ships that never were? Canon ships?

Aw man, seriously?!

Those of you who have been here a long time know, all my ships are ones that never were! I'm like the Joe Diffie song, I wait forever for ships that don't come in!

Ok, in seriousness, one of my favourite ships still is Reggie/Ian from Fame. They never really got together on the show, though they had MOMENTS, one of who is vid-linked in an earlier post and the exec producer has said that if the show had gone on another year, we would have seen them together one screen. I'm a fandom of one in that show though! Especially as they were in season six when it had moved networks and changed casts etc.

Although, speaking of ships that never were, if you watched season two and three of Fame and didn't ship Bruno and Doris, I'm not so sure we can be friends.

Ships that never were? Mike/Debra from The Following are the main one right now; I would put them as doomed but I'm still in denial.

Warrick/Sara from CSI. Sam/Daniel from Stargate.

Favourite doomed? CJ/Simon from West Wing. I howled. Runner up spot to Tony/Michelle from 24.

ETA. Forget the above, I know my answer. Jake and Peyton from One Tree Hill. After all they went through, the scorching chemistry, the tears, every day is Sunday evening and a FREAKING MARRIAGE PROPOSAL, Schwann made her mutter "I love you Lucas" in her sleep? Like, what the actual ever loving fuck?

Still not over that.

Canon ships.

Canon? ships?

You mean there is such a thing???

My favourite, though Kenny/Lynda holds a place in my heart, would probably have to be Spike/Lynda from Press Gang. (An oldie but a goodie!). The whole date episode is still great 25 years on (holy smokes it's that long!) and all their scenes were amazing together. This was back before Moffat vanished into a cloud of his own cleverness.

That said, should current W13 spoilers/spec on tumblr come through, we may have a late entrant!

As always, I've probably forgotten several - hit me in the comments if you think I have!

14 Write about your first fandom crush(es). (Post a picture of them if you can!)

I've been trying to think of this one and I honestly keep coming back to it, though it's not a fandom as such... but I've loved Brian Orser since the 1984 Olympics when I was seven and I love him still to this day. (I have rooted for skaters I don't even know because I saw him send them out.)

I can't post a pic on DW, so here, have a video. This is Brian's last Canadian Stars on Ice tour and the music is I Believe in Happy Endings/The Story of my Life by Neil Diamond. Grab a tissue before you press play.

15 We're halfway there and it's a Friday! Just pimp something you've made and/or written. (And if you haven't written/made anything, pimp something from someone else that you love!)

I'm going to have to go with the thing I'm proudest of lately, the longest thing that I've written in an age: my Het Big Bang entry. It's The Following, Mike Weston/Debra Parker and it's the season written from their POVs. The summary read In "Chapter Two", it was Parker and Ma'am. In "The Final Chapter", he called her Deb. This is how Mike Weston and Debra Parker got from there to here The end scene was the third one written and I love it.

Warmer for the Spark

And to continue the pimpage, this is the marvellous art that [personal profile] twisted_slinky did for it.

Marvellous art that made me squee

Missed yesterday so here's a two-fer!

12 Okay. Let's be real. We all have lives outside of fandom. What else are you obsessed with, or particularly good at, that most LJ'ers don't know about?

And mind promptly goes blank!

I think most LJers know that I'm a teacher; I'm not sure if they know that I'm very good at maths- I was that girl in the class who didn't have to think about the answer but could just get it and figure it out, and if all else failed looked at the answer and work backwards. I don't know if people know that I like photography and that I'm good at it, even if I don't get to do it as much as I would like...

That really sounds like I'm bragging to me, and I'm not good at that!

13 Post a photo that you love.

Not the best one I've ever taken but this is my little Neverland Pirate all dressed up for Halloween!

Not sure how to post this to DW so the link I hope goes to LJ!

11 What movie are you most looking forward to this holiday season? (Link to a trailer so we can experience the impending awesomeness too!)

Not having got to the cinema in age, I don't even know what's coming out. So I guess the second Thor film?

This is a sucky answer but I've just done my first ever Board of Management meeting, and my brain now faces the other way!

Oooh edit! Can I put down the Veronica Mars film? I know it's not holiday season but I'm all over that one!

10 What's your favorite new Fall 2013 TV show? (If fic exists, share your favorites!)

I have not seen any of the new ones. I want to see Sleepy Hollow but I've not got to it yet. Am hoping for another catch up on Sky soon!
helsinkibaby: (dannykono)
9 Who is your favorite villain?

I've been thinking about this all day and I'm sorry, but I don't actually have one? Which I know is odd because lots of fandom love them some villains but I do not appear to be one of them. If you pushed me to the pin of my collar, I'd probably end up saying Spike from Buffy because even before they neutered chipped him, James Marsters did a great job with him. Lover's Walk and the "love's bitch" speech, I still love.

Or Mark Sheppard as Badger in Firefly. Because Mark Sheppard is made of awesome.

8 Post a song that makes you want to write. (Or gets you in the mood to read All Of The Fanfic.)

I am on the phone at the moment so can't embed a YouTube clip, however one of the many songs I love for an answer like this is Tim McGraw's One of those Nights. I first heard it when I was falling hard for Debra/Mike and I always see them in my head when I listen to it.

I will embed the video as soon as I get to a computer!

ETANot fond of the official video, so have a live performance from last year's CMAs!

7 Share your favorite stories from your current fandom love(s)/ship(s). Tell us why they're amazeballs if you're so inclined.

Well, if you remember yesterday's entry, you'll remember that it was all about unpopular/uncon ships and the fic that's out there is scarce as hen's teeth. When it comes to Mike/Debra, much of it is mine, but TaffySinclair has two fabulous Mike/Debra fics on AO3. Static on the Radio has Mike and Debra in a relationship, with Mike trying to find out about Debra's past. bottle up and explode has them meeting up again eighteen months after the Carroll case ended.

For Pete/Myka, the one I've found that I just adore is Spin Me Round Just To Pin Me Down by sleepingheartsawake which is a look at how Myka realised that Pete was in love with her and how she realised she loved him back. This is the summary - So here they are. They just saved the world again and she might have almost died and he looks at her and there's that thing in his eyes that she only sees when he looks at cookies or his mother and suddenly she knows. How can you not want to read that?

Two others that I remembered from my bookmarks list at AO3 --

Five People Who Realised Catherine is Fucking Awesome (And One Person Who Already Knew) - Hawaii Five-0 and the title says it all! Good Steve/Cath is hard to find!

And the benchmark for all Sherlock Molly/Lestrade fic - An Avalanche of Detour Signs by gyzym. It rewrites the two seasons from a Molly/Lestrade perspective and it's in character and amazing and wonderful and ALL THE GOOD THINGS!
helsinkibaby: (the following_mikedebra_eyesex)
6 What's your current fandom love(s) and/or ship(s)?

The one that I'm currently most active in is The Following, mostly due to a certain Agent Mike Weston. (I love him.) My ship is Mike/Debra (I'm sure you all are stunned, stunned to hear that!) which will make season two interesting seeing as, you know, they buried her alive and all. (I am in complete denial about this; the introduction of Jessica Stroup as a potential canon love interest for Mike will be either them co-existing in my heart or I will stop watching. I don't know.) Let's just say my het big bang is my personal canon for them.

I'm also catching up on Warehouse 13 and cursing myself for not watching it sooner, though I've checked and when it began was when Nimoy was born so I wasn't really looking for anything new to watch, I had other things on my mind! But I've mainlined season three and am going through season four, having seen the second half of that on SyFy, mainly due to Ashmore love (see above fandom!). I just love the (mostly) lightheartenedness of it all, the way that it can unexpectedly slay you with just one line and the whole chemistry the cast have.

Somewhat controversially, I ship Pete/Myka (controversial because of the BrOTP of it all, not to mention HG Wells) and Steve/Claudia (because Steve is canonically gay. And I have a workaround for that and even if it's not romantic I just love them together so there.)

I also watch Hawaii 5-0 (Danny/Kono, Steve/Catherine), NCIS LA (Nate/Kensi still own my heart and I want him back on screen damn it!) Castle (Lanie/Esposito gimme more!) .... I'm sure there are others but those are the ones I'm either catching up with on the Sky Box or waiting to come back!
helsinkibaby: (iansgirl)
5 What show from your childhood would you love to bring back?

See there's a part of me that wants to see a Fame reboot. Ms Grant could be the principal, and Bruno could be the music teacher and Doris the drama teacher and they would absolutely be married/together/have a tortuous will they won't they when Doris divorces her husband. They could have cameos from various alumni and never ever mention the fact that we'll never again see Leroy dance or Reggie sing. And they could hold auditions in the Benjamin Shorofsky Memorial Auditorium.

I may have thought about this a little.

Of course, I'd be terrified if they did reboot it because for every BSG, there is a Melrose Place.

But that would definitely be the standout for me.
