Title: The Only Myth That Counts
Author: helsinkibaby
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: JJ/Hotch
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None, and we’re talking gleefully AU after about 3.11 or so.
Word Count: 438
Notes: For the [livejournal.com profile] writers_choice challenge 271 “myth/mythical”. Title shamelessly adapted from “St Elmo’s Fire.”

Hotch is well aware that happy marriages, even happy relationships, border on the mythical when you’re working in the FBI, especially in the BAU.

Gideon’s marriage imploded, his relationship with his son teetering between rocky and non-existent.

Rossi’s marriages exploded, all three of them, each divorce more vitriolic than the last, and who knew how many dalliances there had been outside that, all with similar endings.

Garcia and Kevin, a match that everyone thought was made in geek heaven, hadn’t lasted either, and he’s not entirely sure that Kevin’s operating system has ever been the same since, though Garcia will swear on every troll doll in her collection that she had nothing to do with its sudden and mysterious malfunction.

Even his own marriage, to the woman he’d loved since he was in high school, had fallen apart, and that was the biggest blow of all, because for the longest time, they’d been the shining example of how things could be, should be.

If Hotch and Haley couldn’t make it, he’d heard someone mutter, what hope did anyone have?

There was a time when Hotch would have agreed with that, a time when he thought that he’d had his shot and blown it, that he couldn’t get that lucky twice in one lifetime.

A happy marriage and the job they did were incompatible; anything else was a myth, hearsay, an illusion.

That was then.

Now, as JJ’s head leans against his shoulder, as his fingers play with the ends of her hair, he shifts on the couch cushions to get more comfortable, and if he manages to pull her closer as he does so, well, that’s just a bonus. She knows, of course, what he’s doing, and she scoots even closer and he feels her smile against the fabric of his shirt. His free hand reaches up, steals under the fabric of her t-shirt, finding soft skin and she giggles, twists as he finds a particularly sensitive spot. She swats half-heartedly, ineffectively, at his hand, and he stills its movement, but keeps it where it is.

“We should head up,” he tells her quietly. “We’ve got an early start tomorrow…”

She shakes her head, mutters a noise of protest. “Let’s stay here… just for a little while,” she mumbles, and he can’t find it in his heart to deny her.

Somewhere, outside these walls, something horrible is doubtless happening, something that’s going to make them jump on a plane, but that’s for tomorrow.

Tonight is for them, for what they’ve found together, and if lasting happiness is a myth, then Hotch knows it’s the only myth that counts.
