So, leobrat had a meme and 'twas this...
Comment here if you want to play, and I will give you three-six couples that I associate with you, and you make an entry in your journal talking about those couples and fics that you wish the universe would write for you.
So I did and she gave me --
Veronica/Weevil (Veronica Mars)
Danny/Kono (Hawaii Five-0)
Doug/ Kate (The Cutting Edge)
And since the first one I did went long, I'm doing this in parts! So without further ado,
Doug and Kate, (The Cutting Edge)
I have loved this film since the first time I saw it and this meme means I have to do a rewatch of it! Due to my love of skating, or perhaps in spite of it, I can overlook the plot holes about skating that come up (even though Natalia Mishkutenok and Craig Shephard proved it was possible for a hockey player to be a decent pairs skater, there's no way Doug could have got to Olympic gold standard in so short a space of time and don't start me on the physics of the Pamchenko) and I root for Kate and Doug like they're a real skating couple. The way that they balance one another out just makes me smile, and you just know that he'd do anything in the world for her and she feels the same way about him, even if getting her to admit is is another story! I love that neither of them is perfect and that there are times in the film where they both make mistakes, and that they learn from them to make it all work out in the end. (I'm a sucker for a good cheesy love story, and Moira Kelly's face before they start skating -"it's out!" "It's in!" "What's the difference?" "The difference is, I'm in the mood to kick a little ass." - just makes me grin even thinking of/ typing the dialogue!
Fic I wish the universe would write - I guess I'm lucky because there's so little fic out there and what people write is excellent. Perri wrote a fic where they win the Olympics and break into the Olympic stadium in the wee small hours to skate for fun because Kate's never done it before. Someone else, probably for Yuletide, did one where they got the silver and Doug went apeshit in the kiss and cry, and there's fics where she meets his family too, all of which I love.
But I would love to see a fic where they lose the gold medal, and badly (because if they deducted for Surya's backflip in '98, they'd have murdered for the Pamchenko) and instead of Doug going ballistic, he's the one in the interviews going, "we can't control what the judges do but we're going to worlds and we're going to kick ass," while Kate is so devastated she can hardly talk. She wants to quit but Doug talks her into fighting back and they go to worlds (which in 92 were in Oakland, California, USA, as close to a home worlds as they're going to get) and they do go there and they kick ass and win the gold/some sort of medal. And then there's only two years to the next Olympics so on to Lillehamar in 94!
I may have thought about that a little too much...
