To the ten (so far) people who have responded to my last question, I thank you. You may, I'm sure, have wondered why I would ask such a thing. The reason is this: I had just got off the phone with WeddingVideoGuy. WVG had sent us our wedding DVD and we had looked at disc one last Thursday night, whereupon I emailed him straight away, for two reasons.

First when he said he'd edit out bits of the church, and I quote, "the bits you'd fast forward through", I assumed he meant the consecration of the Mass, the Communion, etc, the bits that are the same at every Mass.

The First and Second Readings, which were picked because they meant something to us were not on the DVD. Not a good sign.

Second, when going through the disc to double check we hadn't missed them (dirt on the disc meant it skipped on the first go around) I noticed that when I was walking up the aisle, I was walking up the "asile" according to the DVD titles.

So I mentioned this to him, assuming it was a mistake. He then proceeded to tell me that that is the correct way of spelling it, because it comes from Old Latin, and they spell it like that all the time, and I do quote, because "it avoids all the arguments then."

I managed to bite my tongue and not point out that I am not old, nor am I Latin, and merely pointed out that that might be all very well and good, but that it's not the way most people spell it. I was told that it was still right. I then asked could it be changed to the way that most people would spell it, because every time I looked at it, I would think automatically that it was wrong.

"Oh, we can do that," is what I was told.

Upon hanging up from him, I googled. I wikipedia'ed. I went to Merriam Webster online and Dictionary.com. I looked up etymology sites and Latin to English sites. And I checked the two print dictionaries that we have in the house. NOWHERE can I find reference to this Old Latin horseshit that got handed down the phone to me. And I mean, if google and wiki can't find it, how far off the path have we strayed???

Ergo, my question to see how you all would spell it!

And, I suppose, my further question - if this were your wedding video, or you were looking at a wedding video, and you saw "asile", would you think that it was spelled wrong?

By the way, he said he'd check about the readings and get back to me in the next couple of days; I don't give a rat's ass what he says, it's totally being changed!

Back from honeymoon since last Thursday and trying to catch up with life, family and the internet! (Not to mention Dr Who but that's a separate post!)

The wedding was amazing... it rained cats, dogs and other small animals, but what do you know, the cliche is true, and I really didn't care. (Looked at the window at half seven that morning, the sky had the look that the rain was in for the day, and I just shrugged and went, oh well, that's that with that!)

The church was great, some of my class were waiting for me outside, rain and all (5 of the girls, with parents and little sisters, and two of them came into the church, crept all the way up the side aisle and were sitting there about four rows back. As someone said to me, "They were so good... they didn't talk, they stood when they had to and kneeled when they had to, they were so sweet!) Fr Michael was a big hit, comment of the day was "I have never laughed so much in a church!" And I wasn't even afeared lighting the candle! (Me=Pyrophobe)Though the person who dressed the altar did put our individual candles on the wrong side, so I lit Karl's at the start and he lit mine, but I think I was the only one who noticed!

Reception got off to bumpy start, as when we got there and it had cleared enough to take some photos of the cars with the groomsmen and bridesmaids, and as we were about to go in, our wonderful duty manager Aine looks at us, glass of champagne in each hand and goes, "Now, I don't want you to panic, but we've no electricity." *boggles* Turns out Eric Clapton was playing in Malahide Castle just down the road, and when he was doing his soundcheck at half past twelve that day, he blew the electricity in the whole town. Half the people in the church knew, as they were staying at the hotel (some were having showers, drying/straightening hair etc) and the rest of them soon found out as it went around like Chinese whispers! That said, I never knew til we got to the hotel - one of the Mercury wives (my dad's company) heard it and without even blinking goes, "Don't tell Helsinkibaby, and don't tell HelsinkiMammy!" It worked too, as Mam never copped it til she got to the hotel and Dad said they couldn't check in because there was no power, she hadn't even noticed the candles til then! The hotel were great, they did the welcome reception in candlelight (which I'm told created a nice atmosphere) and put on extra canapes, and the electricity came back just as K and I were upstairs about to do the cake photo. Apparently, there was a big cheer downstairs. Not much of a wait on dinner either. (Thank God, I was starved!)

Reception was great, people enjoyed the band, and Jono from the cons was the DJ... our first song was to "She's Everything" by Brad Paisley, the second was "Always" by Atlantic Starr...even if the band did get it wrong and put the wrong cd on! (Was a two disc compilation CD, and Atlantic Starr had a song on each. I told Eric the right one, but he just told Mark "Atlantic Starr" and Mark found the first track by them on the CD and didn't look any further. Which might have been ok if the song hadn't been their homage to infidelity, "Secret Lovers"!!!) I went up, told them it was the wrong one and we got back on track fairly quickly... no way was I having that for the second dance!

For those of you curious, our local website has photos - Balbriggan.net photos of the wedding and if anyone is on Facebook, there are at least eleventy million on there - lots of friends with lots of cameras!

Honeymoon was three weeks in the States - Hawaii, San Francisco, Niagara Falls and New York. But as with DW, that's another post!!!

If I missed anything important in the last month, drop me a line in comments please?

Well, since I don't know if I'll get to this tomorrow (and since I seem to have a *gasp* spare few minutes today) I just wanted to say thank you to those of you who are involved in [livejournal.com profile] monitor_baby - seriously, [livejournal.com profile] demon_faith told me about it on Monday when I was all sick and throat infectiony and antibiotics hadn't kicked in, and you guys made me cry in a good way, so thank you! Please know that my lack of commenting isn't due to lack of gratitude, simply lack of time!

In wedding news, the first guests have invaded our house. My dress is hanging up at my parents'. We collected the suits today. Finished up work yesterday (and after me being out on Tuesday, when the kids saw me, they gave me a round of applause in their line and started singing "Here Comes the Bride"!) Church rehearsal is at half eleven tomorrow morning, I'm being sprayed orange at half seven tonight, and my nails are getting done tomorrow. The flowers are confirmed, candles and mass booklets are sitting beside me, and all I have to do now (all!) is write a boatload of cheques and hope the means is there to have them cashed!

Please to be saying prayers for good weather on Saturday?

This is the third night in a row where I haven't got home before nine o'clock because of doing fiddley wedding related things. I just want an evening where I can sit on the sofa for five minutes with a cup of tea in one hand and a gossipy magazine in the other. Just five minutes!

Sunday night, REO Speedwagon were amazing! Supposed to be a standing gig in the Olympia (my favourite concert venue, it's a theatre, it's small and intimate and no seat/standing spot is a bad one) but when we got there, there were the stalls down, unreserved seating. We ended up four rows back, dead centre. (Would have been front row but then we'd've been way over to the side - we decided centre was better). They played a few songs from the new album, but mostly the stuff you'd expect them to play, and I was singing along to everything - think K was quite afraid! Especially when the introduction to "Tough Guys" started (a song that was at the top of my "It'd be great if they play it but I'm not sure they will" list) - it's got a snip of the Little Rascals as the intro, so it's real distinctive, and when I heard it, I screamed. Ear-piercing, teeny bopper scream. And KC completely messed up the lyrics to the second verse ("She doesn't like the tough guys, be-da bop bop da dee da da da dah..." instead of "she says that they've got brains down where they sit") but I love him anyway.

Queued up on the way out to get the new CD (had got the tour book and the t-shirt on the way in, declined the CD then, who was I kidding, seriously?) and then as we were walking by the alley, I noticed there were very few at stage door. Said so to Himself, accompanied by a beseeching look, and his response was "What are you looking at me for? If you want to go, go."

I love the bones of that man.

So off we went to the stage door, and we waited and we chatted to the other dozen or so uber-fans that were there, and then they came out and they all had their own sharpies and they all spoke to me and signed my tour book and they were lovely and I'm smiling here just thinking about it. *happy dances*

School tour yesterday went well. Though I was ticked off on Monday - two of the UnHoly Trinity got themselves banned from the tour last week. (Their crime, one brought a lighter into school, the other as well as being in trouble three days in a row, brought in caps, like for a cap gun, and they were planning to set them on fire to see what happened.) One of them, the one in trouble three days in a row, who had told untold lies all week and been involved in bullying another child came in on Monday with a swagger ten foot tall on him, and wasted no time in telling me and all the other kids where his parents had taken him at the weekend.

Any guesses?

Yep. The place we were going the following day on our school tour. *boggles* And they wonder why he is the way he is?

One more week left with that class... next Wednesday is my last day. *happy dances*

Slightly tentative at the moment, but it looks like we have a workable seating plan for the wedding! Woohoo!!! *happy dances while touching wood*

Also got engagement photo done this morning... yeah, two years after booking the photographer and two weeks before the wedding. We're organised like that.

In the not so fun front, HelsinkiNana took a turn this morning and was taken to hospital for tests. Which so far have turned up negative on everything. *fingers crossed* Not heard any news since lunchtime, and no news is good news on something like that, yes?

REO Speedwagon tonight... so looking forward to that!

Have finally tracked down recording of REO Speedwagon's Second Decade of Rock and Roll on CD, yay!! On the other hand, it only takes the first notes of "Keep On Loving You" done reggae style to know that some ideas are just really really bad.

Also, for [livejournal.com profile] who_otp's Rare Ships Month, [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 wrote a treatise on why we should all ship Harry/Sarah and very good it is too.

STEN weekend (joint stag and hen in Liverpool) went well, may take me a week to recover fully. And since I have another hen on Saturday night, the signs aren't looking good!

On the bright side, dress fitting on Saturday! Yay!

I have just spent most of the evening writing and addressing wedding invites, trying to keep my writing neat and addressing envelopes in a straight line with no lines on the envelope...as someone who writes on a black/white board every day, I should be able to do this. However, as anyone who has sat in a classroom with me will attest, this is not something I have ever mastered.

I am now cross-eyed and headachey, and I'm on yard duty tomorrow. *sulks*

Happy Leap Day!

Which was also "Mad Hair Day" (fundraising for charity) in the school... you'd want to see the hairstyles we had. Which was fine, until a lot of the kids used those spray in colours of every hue, and then walked to school in the lashing rain... oh yes, there was running. Thankfully most (we hope) had the cop on to wear their old uniform jumpers!

Himself is still on nights so I was all on for a nice night of relaxing and doing nothing for the end of the week... until the power went off at half nine! Place in pitch darkness, me upstairs, had to use the phone to navigate downstairs to find the torch in the utility room, then found where we keep the candles and lit them (I have a serious fire phobia, this is the first candle I've ever lit in my life... a couple of years ago, I got Himself a birthday cake with candles, I had to get him to light them. This is a big thing for me!) and then occupied myself watching skating videos on my iPod until it came back an hour later. Those who showed me how to find the program to do this, I owe you my sanity!

And in other exciting news, I tried on my wedding dress today!!! *twirls like she did on a box in front of a mirror* It is lovely, and a nice fit, though will need slight adjustments... I loves it I does!
helsinkibaby: (Default)
Nice weekend had here....best man and groomsman were over to get the suits sorted out and meet my parents and generally catch up...three out of three on that which is of the good!

Wedding shaping up nicely, need to sort out invitations and get a florist, spent weekend hashing out wedding names and etc etc and we think we have a clear idea of where we are, but we're not too sure... oh well, it'll all come good!

Not seen the dancing but caught the results show, my thoughts on which can be summed up thusly - Blather )

My convention gang, you should have got an email from me in the last hour or so, so check your emails! [livejournal.com profile] demon_faith I am forever wondering if I have your email addy right, so if you've not got something, give me a shout and I'll resend!

People! I has a wedding dress!

Fitting for it is on Friday, but I has picked it and it is loverly!!!! (as evidenced by my appalling grammar!!!)
helsinkibaby: (Default)
I just sat down and wrote, off the top of my head, the list for the church for the wedding, including family, friends and people that my mum and dad want invited.

I did it in Excel, and did AutoSum at the end.

96.

I didn't know I *knew* 96 people!

And then that's without Himself's...

Where did I leave that paper bag?
helsinkibaby: (Default)
Random spammy thought that I wish to share with you all.

In exactly 12 months, it will be my wedding day.

*thinks of how much is to be done*

*freaks out*

Nice and productive couple of days that I have had today and yesterday... I booked a wedding photographer, provisionally at any rate; need to talk to them during the week. I now have a kettle (vital!), a toaster (insert your own BSG joke here), plates, cups, cutlery, bedclothes and, after today, bedroom furniture. *basks in the glow of houseownerly pride and impending bankruptcy*

Though since my fiancé has just accused me of flirting with the best man, I may be living in the house on my own! *shakes head and smiles*

Arts week in the school this week, one of those lovely weeks which you know you can just write off as a bad job and have done with it, though at least we have the midterm break at the end of it... *happy bounce* And I have yard duty tomorrow, with half the school gone to The Helix theatre for a music concert... ah, life is good!!!!
helsinkibaby: (Default)
Still no word on the house... the wheels of red tape grind slowly. Yes, I know I'm mixing my metaphors. No, I don't particularly care. This has been going on since June 7th, I want my hosue damnit!

There are times when I wonder why I teach for a living. Times when picking stones off the railway (TM HelsinkiMammy) has great appeal.

[livejournal.com profile] smiley_b, I have no idea if you've seen this, but Criminal Minds Season One bonus material announced

On the slightly more frivolous side, a recently married colleague of mine bequeathed me her stack of bridal mags... HelsinkiMammy and I spent yesterday afternoon flicking through them and swapping over and pointing out stuff... *giddy bounce*

Is it midterm yet?
helsinkibaby: (Default)
Every time I do yard duty, I just remember that in July I'm going to be grateful I did. Today was one of those days, it rained so we kept them in, then we let them out halfway through, then it began to rain again so we got them into lines, then it stopped raining... and I should have remembered to plan a writing heavy day but no, I forgot that since it was my first yard duty back... I will remember for the next time.

Only two days to go this week, course day on Friday for (another) wedding in England. I need to tell his friends to stop getting married so often.

Speaking of weddings... found this online - the church where my wedding shall be, all shiny and done up!
