Olympic fever

Despite my best plans, Himself coming down with bronchitis on the bank holiday weekend, necessitating a trip to the out of hours doctor meant I couldn’t sit down and watch the Olympics as planned. I know the vault results and am about to sit down and watch it now, but I did get to see the pommel horse live which, let’s face it, with Rhys McClenaghan going for gold, was the big one for me. I have rarely been as nervous looking at anything in my life and don’t think I even breathed for the time he was doing his routine. When I saw him cry after the score - and what a score, 15.533 - I knew things were looking good but you can never celebrate too soon… although, when the last fella, Hur, came off the horse, my arms involuntarily went into the air. And as proof she is in fact mine, Abigail let out a little noise too, so I don’t feel as bad now! Hearing Amhran na bhFiann played, seeing the flag go up, his reaction… I used to dream about days like this and in this calendar year alone, I’ve seen an Irish gymnastic gold medalist and Irish ice dancers at Europeans and Worlds. 15 year old me would not believe it.-

In other news, myself and Abigail attempted plum jam this evening! We shall see how it tastes tomorrow. I’m slightly worried it may set a bit too much… it was very runny til it wasn’t but fingers crossed!

OH no, bronchitis is not any fun, I hope he's better soon. Enjoy what you can watch of the Olympics and I hope the jam turns out well!

You and me both - he is not a good patient!

Jam set very thick but it is still spreadable and tasty…we may invest in a sugar thermometer to take the guess work out!

Men never are. LOL I darn near murdered my late husband after his transplant surgery. 🤣

Definitely invest in a thermometer, it'll help so much. And have fun with it - I haven't made jam in a long time, but it was always fun.

Abigail can get a little worked up over things, easily overwhelmed and likes things to be perfect, so I always take these opportunities to say stuff like “okay, how can we make it better the next time, what can we do differently, let’s make a plan”… it was also my first time making jam too so I can see now that having the thermometer and not relying on our eyes, especially when we don’t quite know what we’re looking for, would be A Good Thing!

That pommel final was quite something. McClenaghan has really matured and come into his own.

It was so amazing! I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous watching gymnastics, my stomach was like a washing machine, particularly remembering what happened him in Tokyo. But to see him hit that routine and get the gold… it was unreal. And he’s done lots of TV over here between RTE and BBC and he comes across so well!
