And as the Canadian men taking the ice, a news report, unconfirmed, appears on twitter. By the time the final flight take the ice, it's confirmed.
Toller Cranston, six time national champion, dead at the age of 65.
One of a kind, innovator, artiste, legend.
And possessed of one hell of a sense of timing, on the ice and off.
RIP
But as if that wasn't enough to have you choking on your cup of tea, there comes the news this evening from unnamed sources that Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov will skate in Japan and then split up. No word on what she'll do but he will apparently skate with Sinitsina. The Russian fed has allegedly signed off on this and will make it official post Worlds.
Some context for the WTFery- they won the bronze medal in Sochi. The two ahead of them have, for all intents and purposes, retired. Not only are they the red hot favourite for this title, they are the red hot favourite for all world titles up to 2018, and the OGM too. (Early days but there is that much hype with them.) They are Russian, a federation that has traditionally taken the "If you win us medals, you will skate together until your toes fall off" approach to partnerships. This whole thing is unheard of and I can't quite believe it on many many levels.
There are no words to say how excited I am to see this series... if I were on twitter I would now be using the following hastag -- #pleasedontsuck . I will not use it for a tag here but know that I am thinking it!
and
Most of my week's free time has been looking at European Figure Skating championships(the Brits got a bronze you guys,I am excited!) and trying to download some of US Nationals and Canadians which were both on last weekend... my twitter got quite the workout! Loving how Jason Brown's free skate has gone viral- close on 2 million views or something on YouTube? and at least two people linked to it on my Facebook feed, with one of them tagging me in the comments and telling me to check it out... this was Wednesday; I'd already looked at it an obsessively huge amount of times. Ah, normals.
And The Following starts back in the US on Sunday, here on Tuesday and my period of denial must surely come to an end. *moments silence for the denial* OTOH, any advance press I've read about it has Kevin Williamson telling us that it's not going to be the same show as season one so there may be wiggle room for my denial if I indeed treat it as an entirely new show??? If not, well, what the hell, it's not like I'm a stranger to AU...

Nov. 15th, 2013 08:41 pmAlso, in YouTubing for the last post, I came across this gem which I had never seen, from the Night Moves special in 1991. Brian Orser and Katarina Witt skating to Lady in Red. It is cheesetastic and mullet-tastic in ways that only 90s skating could be.
And just because, my two favourite bits of this year's CMA Awards --
And also, guess who has this movie winging her way to her on DVD? THIS GIRL RIGHT HERE!
NaBloPoMo Day 14 and 15
Nov. 15th, 2013 08:21 pmI've been trying to think of this one and I honestly keep coming back to it, though it's not a fandom as such... but I've loved Brian Orser since the 1984 Olympics when I was seven and I love him still to this day. (I have rooted for skaters I don't even know because I saw him send them out.)
I can't post a pic on DW, so here, have a video. This is Brian's last Canadian Stars on Ice tour and the music is I Believe in Happy Endings/The Story of my Life by Neil Diamond. Grab a tissue before you press play.
15 We're halfway there and it's a Friday! Just pimp something you've made and/or written. (And if you haven't written/made anything, pimp something from someone else that you love!)
I'm going to have to go with the thing I'm proudest of lately, the longest thing that I've written in an age: my Het Big Bang entry. It's The Following, Mike Weston/Debra Parker and it's the season written from their POVs. The summary read In "Chapter Two", it was Parker and Ma'am. In "The Final Chapter", he called her Deb. This is how Mike Weston and Debra Parker got from there to here The end scene was the third one written and I love it.

And to continue the pimpage, this is the marvellous art that

Sep. 11th, 2012 10:03 pmRandom off season skating news the first - Kevin Van Der Perren has announced that he wants to try pairs skating.. And not with his wife. Leaving aside the WTF reaction that I think all of us might have on hearing this news, can I just say:No. Baby, I love you, but no. Your hip is shonky, you went out on a high with an amazing skate in Nice, seriously, let's leave well enough alone, hmmm?
Also, Adam Rippon has left Yuka and Jason and is going to train with Rafael Artaunian (whose name I have butchered. It's been that kind of day/week). While part of me is going "Another coaching change?Really?), a still greater part is going, "If RA kicks his ass and gets him jumping" (because any coach that says "Good job", after a skate like he had in Nice needs to be changed, sorry Yuka) then maybe it's all for the good." But with Evan back next year and Johnny too, men's skating in the USA looks like it's going to be insane.. Take that any way you like.
New school year has begun. I have a class five million times nicer than last years but man. Can they talk. Give them a piece of work to do by themselves quietly, and it's chatter. By Friday of last week I broke and gave out hell. I got, "But, Miss. We're talking about the work." I actually said, "I DON'T CARE! I told you to do it on your own with no talking, now do it on your own with no talking!" Seriously, what part of that is ambiguous? Really.
Am considering trying to do the Small Fandom Big Bang and something on a Sherlock prompt party post has given me an idea that might spin into a Sherlock Big Bang fic. Hold me?

Aug. 15th, 2012 09:18 pmIn skating news I really didn't want to hear but did, Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker have terminated their partnership. She is quitting skating, he wishes to continue to Sochi and is looking for a new partner. No reasons given as yet, even on FSU there are no "insiders" giving their POV. This means that Rock has 17 days to register for Sectionals or he'll lose the entire season, which as a pre-Olympic season is not of the good. Not a good day for US Pairs.
Fic recs! Epilogue by snowpuppies, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawn/Xander, After it's all said and done, only two remain. A beautiful look at what might happen if all the magic was sucked from the world and only two Scoobies were left.
Mr. & Mrs. Barton (Or: Why Natasha Sends Jennifer Aniston an Annual Apologetic Fruit Basket) by shellybelle on AO3. Exactly what is sounds like; The Avengers as inspiration for Mr and Mrs Smith. Marvellous!
Been a rough week and a half at work, the weather is the only thing making it bearable - I did PE three times this week, have been taking the kids out for English reading and even let them run around and play "Stuck in the Mud" for five mins at the end of the lesson one day! Monday will tell the tale of the rest of my year...
Steven Cousins was 40 yesterday. How is this even possible?
And since the sun seems to have gone to my head...

Jan. 29th, 2012 08:37 pmSpent most of this past week disappearing into skating and pondering the irony of the fact that Europeans are in Sheffield in England, yet the Tv coverage is absolutely the worst it has ever, ever been.
Two fics I found while pondering -
The Last Scene by ami_ven, NCIS, The last book in the L.J. Tibbs series stayed on the best sellers list for eight weeks.
They Say Miracles are Past (They're Wrong) by elzed, 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick/Kat. After college, they meet in New York. Things happen. NC17 rating. Good enough to make me want to pull out my DVD and look at the film.

Skate Canada
Oct. 30th, 2011 09:06 pmToday and indeed this weekend I have been introducing Nimoy to the wonders of figure skating via Skate Canada. There is work yet to be done I feel.
That said, today I ended up seeing Tessa and Scott's short, free and gala. I swear, I could look at them all day. As ye all know I don't do RPF, but if I did? I totally would!

Oct. 11th, 2011 10:26 pmHave been internet surfing rather than writing. Bad me. However, I did find some interesting posts on writing, about women in fiction and the dreaded Mary Sue... Ladies, Don't Let Anybody Tell You You're Not Awesome by Sarah Rees Brennan, and You Can Stuff Your Mary Sue Where The Sun Don't Shine by Zoe Marriott.
Also, though I don't watch Hawaii 5 0 as such, meaning I've seen the odd ep here or there, I discovered while looking around online two Danny/Kono fics (yes it's a rare pair, why is anyone surprised? Though if half of what I suspect I've gleaned from the fandom is true, anything outside of Steve/Danny slash is a rare pair!) ....No Love Sincerer and Sugar Never Was So Sweet which is highly NC17 for those of you who don't like that sort of thing.
For the skating fans among you, Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe have welcomed twins. Link includes picture of said twins, be preparared to "aw!" at the cuteness!
