First of all, thank you to everyone who cut-tagged so carefully and helped me to remain spoiler free for American Idol. I have watched both performance and the pathetically and shamefully cut to ribbons with a rusty blade version of the results show results show, and by the end of it I had a huge tension headache, and further thoughts are under the cut.
I think that most people know my opinions on the two finalists... of the two of them, Taylor was the one I wanted to see win, as I really can't stand Katharine. That said, my dream finale was Elliot/Chris, so we know how I was doing with predictions the last few weeks...
Gotta say, on the performances alone, I thought that Taylor deserved it. As Simon said, he won the first round - Living for the City beat Black Horse and the Cherry Tree hands down. Round Two, Over the Rainbow, even though it was *the exact same as it was last week, down to the head dropping back and leaning back on her hand mid-glory-note*, may have been better than Levon, (which I thought Taylor was very nervous on at the start; it's a song that he can't rely on dancing and general madcappery to get him through, ergo, he's more vulnerable on it, until he finds out that the fans still love him), but I still hold the opinion that Levon was better than Black Horse, so that's kinda one and a half to Taylor.
Round Three, and to those of you who said that the songs weren't great, I wholeheartedly agree, but this is American Idol, it's not like the songs they get to record have ever been classics. I was pleased to see the return of two different singles for the winners...it's one thing to have either Fantasia or Diana perform I Believe, they're both female, but I still think having Bo and Carrie singing Inside Your Heaven last year hurt Bo more than it did Carrie (mind you, I'm also a minority that perferred Bo's version). Taylor did have the better song, and I loved his performance of it, but I will say, that during Kat's song, with the key change and the gospel choir and the audience standing? My heart stopped still in the sitting room and I was as convinced as I've ever been convinced of anything in my life that she was going to win it. I was sure of it, and I spent the next couple of hours nursing that thought. Especially since I prefer Taylor, given my track record, and the fact that I've seen two AI finales where the eventual winner was outsung by the runner up - I still say Bo was better than Carrie in the finale last year, and I know for damn sure that Clay outsand Ruben in season two.... Bridge Over Troubled Water people - I'm still bitter!!!!
And did I mention, Taye Diggs in the audience, giving it loads for Taylor after Living for the City??? Caused me to squee like a little fangirl!
Results show - we missed Kat singing with Meatloaf, which I would have liked to see. And apparently, girl didn't know who Meatloaf was? Seriously? *mutters darkly about the difference between youth and stupidity* Also missed Chris singing with Live *grinds teeth* and the boys' group sing. Girls' group sing was very good, the Bacharach number was great, and I got a little misty eyed when Dionne Warwick came out and they went all wavey armed on That's What Friends are For. Also, Chris singing Arthur's Theme? *thud*
Elliot and Diva J Blige... well, now I know why he got such a long intro on his own....she wasn't into sharing the spotlight was she? And can I just say? I love Elliot and I wish he'd gotten into the final and got to sing A Song for You because he was awesome and amazing and I'm so buying his album.
Taylor and Toni Braxton... loved it. Total opposition to Diva J Blige, she really got into it, had fun up there on the stage with him... but it wasn't my favourite moment...
...that was when Clay Aiken came out with really bad hair and the Clayalike just totally freaked out! Most genuine incidence of shock that I've ever seen on any reality show ever, and I thought it was hilarious that it looked like Ryan was actually having to hold him up! Classic classic tv moment, and I must be losing my touch because I never saw it coming! I will say though, that the reason I think the Clayalike was so shocked was partly that he didn't recognise him because of the really bad hair. Did I mention that the hair was baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad?
Taylor/Kat duet... I've Had the Time of My Life ... I love this song. Love it in the film, have closed many a con dancing to it. And Taylor looked like he was having a good time. But a lot of this song epitomised what I dislike about Katharine and her performing... over aware of where the camera is, over aware of where the audience are, and with very little exception, not putting a blind bit of pass on the person who was on the stage with her, singing with her. That said, the obviously choreographed bit where they copied the steps from the movie? Cute.
Taylor being told he was the winner...oh, the relief in my heart was real and true and I was so happy for him. Also, to give Kat her due, she was gracious in defeat, got out of the way and let him have his moment, and didn't throw the rattle from the pram as I was afeared she would. Carrie Underwood on the other hand didn't look a happy bunny! And The Hoff in tears? *giggles* Too funny!
On a completely unrelated note - is everyone except me at the London Expo this weekend????
