When I got home from England, after detailing my woes about flying during the first day of Condition Critical Air Travel Protocols, I made a comment, a one line throw away comment about how I'd just read that Elvis Stojko, one of my favourite skaters, had just announced his retirement, and that I would miss him.
Last night, when reading my emails, I came across a comment to that entry, made early yesterday morning. The comment was utterly scathing towards Elvis, questioning both his mental health and his talent, and while I'm a long time internet skating fan, know well that he's not everyone's cup of tea, this was by far one of the most mean spirited and downright horrible things I've ever read about the man.
And it was said IN MY LIVEJOURNAL bya chickenshit jackass an anonymous poster.
If it was done to get a reaction, congratulations, it's got one, because I'm pissed off over that.
First of all, as stated above, I know there's a lot of skating fans out there who don't like Elvis, for a plethora of reasons. And that's fine, I have no problem with that. I hated Alexei Urmanov's outfits, I thought Surya Bonaly's basic skating was appalling and will tell anyone who will listen to me that Emanuel Sandhu should have been tarred and feathered after his Olympic free skate this year. Those are my opinions and I have a right to voice them here, but what I do not have a right to do is go into someone else's journal, when they've said that Surya was robbed in 94 and start bitching about how wrong they are and how horrible Surya is. It's like going into a (Stargate) Sam/Jack message board and posting a Daniel/Sam fic. {insert your own fandom/pairing here} You just don't do it.
Disagree with me, by all means. Hate his costumes, his music choices, his body type, his footwork, his spins, whatever else the common complaints were. But needlessly attacking the skater on a personal level? No. Not on.
And by God, if you want to do that? If you're that sad and pathetic that the only fun you have is pissing other people the hell off??? SIGN YOUR DAMN NAME TO IT. If they're your opinions, if you can back them up with something that you know, something you've read or seen, then put your name to it, stand up and be counted. I've written skating reviews for years, where I say exactly what I'm thinking, and some of it is funny and some of it is smutty and some of it, well, let's put it this way, there's language floating in it that I wouldn't want my parents/grandmother/children as yet unborn to read. But my name is all over those things and if people want to disagree with me (ie, every Evgeny Plushenko who read me up until about 2004) then they are free to do so.
Because when I write something, I put my name on it. {channelling Sam Seaborn here}
