Kaylee ain’t normally one for keepin’ secrets; everything out in the open, that’s just how she likes it.
But not this.
She made a promise, a long time ago, that she’d never talk about it, not to anyone. It was just a one time thing, a greasy fumble in the engine room when they were both high on relief and adrenaline; they’d been so sure that the heist had gone wrong, and when the Captain’s voice had echoed around the ship, well, one thing had led to another.
But it was just a one-time thing, because he was head-over-heels for Zoe, even if Zoe was being her usual stubborn self, and Kaylee didn’t want to get in the way of that.
She’d grinned and told him it weren’t nothin’ and she’d kept their secret.
Kept one of her own too, that it was far from nothin’ to her and that Zoe didn’t know how damn lucky she was.
If she’s honest though, she liked having the secret, liked havin’ something that was just theirs, that no-one else knew about. Kind of like havin’ a piece of him all to herself, even though he wasn’t ever hers to have.
‘Cept now he’s gone, and even though she has Simon, it’s not the same.
Secrets aren’t the same if it’s only you knows it.

Like most of the guys on the basketball team, on more than one occasion, Jake’s been known to eye up Peyton.
Like most of the guys on the basketball team, Jake would never have dreamed of going there.
Unlike most of the guys on the basketball team, Jake’s reason wasn’t that she was Nathan’s girlfriend-slash-ex, and the Code of the Guys expressly forbid it.
Jake’s reason was that when he looked at Peyton, he saw all sharp words and sharp eyes and sharp edges, and that’s not what he needs in his life. Not with Jenny to consider, not after Nicki.
Then he got to know Peyton, and discovered that he wasn’t the only one hiding things. His secret was a daughter; hers that she wasn’t so tough after all.
She’s not sharp at all, he learns, she’s soft.
Soft, smooth skin that magnetically attracts his hands, slides against his skin like silk as they move together. Soft to his hardness, yielding to him, surrounding him as he moves inside her. Even her fingertips are soft against his back, no matter that they urge him on, pull him as close to her as she can get him. Soft blonde curls tickling his skin as she curls up against him and falls asleep.
Most of the guys on the basketball team have eyed her up, but none of them – not even Nathan – have ever gotten to see her like this.
Jake can’t believe his luck.
