Hammond knows before he goes into the briefing that O’Neill is going to be pissed at him. He also know that O’Neill has a right to be – in general, for a mission like this, he would be allowed to choose his own team, and he’s not going to take kindly to Hammond assigning him a scientist, and a female scientist at that.

Hammond, though, doesn’t much care.

Because he knew Jack O’Neill was going to come out of retirement before O’Neill did.

And he knows that Samantha Carter is going to be on this team, and it’s not just because she’s the premier authority on the Stargate, or because she should have gone through the first time.

He knows those things for the same reason that he knew that Daniel Jackson was still alive, for the same reason that he took the command post at Cheyenne Mountain.

Because for nearly thirty years, he’s been waiting for this. Waiting for them.

For nearly thirty years, he’s been waiting to see their faces again, and now here they are, just like he remembers them.

So when he’s in the briefing, and Captain Carter verbally smacks down every man in the room who doubt her credentials, and he badly hides a smile, people don’t know the real reason he’s smiling.

After all, it’s not every day that your destiny walks in the door.
