Title: The First Day of Forever
Author: helsinkibaby
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0
Pairing: Steve/Catherine
Rating: G
Length: tbc
Summary: Danny helps to calm Steve's nerves.
Notes: For the writers choice "first day of..." challenge.
"I must be crazy."
Steve pulls at the collar of his dress whites, which suddenly seem to have shrunk at least two sizes, and he doesn't realise he's spoken out loud until Danny, standing beside him, chuckles.
"Finally, he realises." It's sad with a certain degree of humour though, fondness even, rather than the exasperation with which it might usually be uttered. Still, the words have Steve turning to Danny sharply and when Danny sees the look on Steve's face, he quickly holds up two hands. "Trust me, my friend," he says, "All the years we've worked together, all the times I've known you're crazy? This is the least crazy thing you've ever done."
Steve has rarely heard Danny sound more sincere and he knows the other man means every word of what he's just said. "Thanks, man."
Of course, Danny being Danny, he has to get the last word. "And while I, personally, would rather have my intestines pulled out through my nose than once again enter into the holy bonds of matrimony, no, you're not crazy at all."
Steve actually grinds his teeth. "Thanks."
Danny chuckles, stops quickly as he glances over his shoulder. "Batter up," he says and that's when the band strikes up "The Wedding March" and everyone stands.
Steve had a bet with Catherine that he'd keep his eyes front and centre until she got up beside him; he loses, spectacularly. He barely lasts five seconds before he looks around and he can't be sad about losing a bet, not when Catherine looks like that. Words fail him and it's only when Danny claps him on the shoulder, issues the instruction, "Breathe," that he realises she's taken his breath away.
He tells her as much when he takes her hand, looks into her smiling face and shining eyes and all his nerves vanish. This is the first day of forever for them, and forever's looking pretty good.

Date: 2013-11-02 09:19 pm (UTC)I'm a little conflicted to be honest. On the one hand I think anything that gives Cath more screen time and some actual agency, as opposed to being Steve's girlfriend who he goes to for favours, is a good thing. I even like the idea of a good old fashioned love triangle- it's the soap fan in me, what can I say?
I don't like how, from what I've heard, Danny seemed to be planting the seed of why do you let her work with her ex type thing, because my head canon has Danny and Cath as good friends. Jealous Steve I have no problem with - I'm one of those people who think he's been stringing Cath along, more or less, he needs something to make him realise what he has.
The way they did it...I was shocked when they killed Billy. (Less when I heard about the actors schedule but still). And I'm interested to see where they go from here with Cath and her not being in the military. People seem to think they're clearing the way for her to join the team, I'm not sure about that, or would she even want to. I'm hoping it'll let Steve see another side to her, a side where he's the one who's worrying about her and taking care of her (if that makes me anti feminist, I don't care. Sue me). I do wish they could have played out the love triangle though.
But as long as Steve and Cath come out of it ok, I'm happy.

Where I seem to differ from lots of fandom is that I don't necessarily take that as him not loving her or they're just friends with benefits - I just think he's emotionally stunted from his dad sending them away after his mom "died", then to go into the Navy/SEAL team which is all very macho and testosterone and not talking about your emotions...and then he is a man and we all know how they can be sometimes! (disclaimer, I am happily married but between him and my male friends and fellas/partners of my female friends, I sometimes wonder how men and women share the same planet!)
It's also nice to get a break from the rabid Catherine /Michelle hate!
