Connie’s hands are cold and shaking, have been for the last three hours, ever since the sight of a little blue cross burned itself into her brain.
“You don’t have to...” she begins, the words dying on her tongue. She tries again. “I mean, it was just one night... I don’t expect...”
Lupo takes her hand. His is warm and gentle, just like his eyes when she looks into them. “We’re in this together,” he promises. “And for what it’s worth? You’re gonna be a great mom.”
For the first time this evening, Connie thinks things might just be ok.
