maggis who was enthused by this insanity!
When the doorbell rings, Jane expects it to be her mother, or Maura. So she's surprised when she sees Joey Grant there instead, especially since he's obviously been home to dry off and change clothes.
"What are you doing here?" She's not trying to be demanding or rude; she's just genuinely surprised and that's clear in her voice.
It's just as clear that he likes the effect he's had on her, at least if that little smile around his lips is any indication. "I needed to talk to you."
Jane frowns. "Didn't we pretty much cover everything out there on the stoop?"
"I thought so," he admits. "But then...look, can I come in? I don't want to do this on your doorstep."
She wants to ask what he means but she steps back and lets him in, takes a second to gather her composure before she turns to face him. "There's nothing to talk about," she reminds him. "You're moving to Washington-"
"No I'm not."
The words are so quietly spoken that for a moment she's sure that she heard him wrong. "What?"
"I'm not moving to Washington. I called them back...said I can't take the job."
Her mouth opens and closes with nothing coming out before she settles on, "Why?"
"You know why, Jane. Because when I thought I was leaving, I waited for hours in the rain to tell you myself. Because of what else I told you out there. And because I don't mean to be immodest-"
Jane chuckles, shakes her head. "You pick now to break the habit of a lifetime?" she mutters, more to herself than him but he doesn't let it stop him.
"But I saw you in your ma's house, at dinner... I saw the way you smiled. Made me think that maybe I got a shot. And I can't live with not knowing how that works out."
She shakes her head, chews her lip. "This job... It's a big deal," she says finally, because it is. It'd be a big deal for anyone, let alone someone who's known for wanting to get to the very top in as short a time as possible. To pass it up, for any reason, let alone for a relationship that doesn't even exist? It makes no sense.
Except, as Jane reminded herself, when she'd been sitting in her parents' dining room with him, it hadn't been all bad. In fact, lots of it had been nice. And when they were sitting on her stoop in the rain, he'd leaned in to kiss her and she'd wanted him to, had had to use all her willpower to pull back and go inside.
"It's a really big deal," she adds weakly when he says nothing and then he does something that sends shivers down her spine.
He shrugs and says,"There'll be other jobs. There's only one Jane Rizzoli. "
He sounds so certain that Jane's knee jerk reaction has her eyes widening in panic as she shakes her head. "You can't give up an opportunity like that for me-" she begins, but he doesn't let her finish, silences her by stepping towards her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders.
"I'm not doing it for you," he tells her and it almost sounds like it might be the truth. "OK, a little for you," he amends, tucking a strand of hair back behind her ear. "But mostly for me. Turns out I don't want to live with wondering what if any more."
"But if.."
"If things don't work out?" He shrugs again but he doesn't move his hands. "I'm ok with that, Jane. I'm not ok with not trying."
She can't think of a response to that and it turns out she doesn't actually need to because that's when he leans into her and kisses her.
It's a more gentle kiss than she might have expected, softer, more tender, as if he's afraid she's going to haul off and slug him. She doesn't though, returns the kiss, finds herself wishing for more.
Except he pulls back, a small smile playing around the edges of his lips. He stares at her for a long moment, runs a finger down her cheek before taking a step back. "I'll, ah, I'll see myself out. Night, Jane."
She should say something, she knows that. Shouldn't be staring after him like some moonstruck schoolgirl. But that's exactly what she does, long after the door closes behind him.
Then she smiles.
