Day 2
In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I saw this and said "changed my life"? Nothing's ever affected me that profoundly.
Then I thought.
Stargate SG1 was the first fandom that I got into online. I started watching the show in the year 2000 and the first ep I saw was Holiday which was a hoot because let's face it, I love a good body swap episode. (I love a bad body swap episode but that's another story). Knowing nothing about the relationships, I was convinced Sam and Daniel were a couple (sample dialogue - "come on, Daniel, you can't die on me now," to which a 'comatose' Daniel replies "It's nice to know you don't just like me for my looks" -- I have shipped for SO much less!) and was shocked when they weren't. An Internet search led me to the old Statisical Outliers site where I first encountered / met neonhummingbird and I joined mailing lists (back in the day, y'all!) for Sam/Daniel where I met other like minded people. It's also where I first posted fanfic, and read all of the Sam/Daniel stuff I could get my hands on. (We were a small crew, but when I think back on some of the doc written... Man, we were good! I mean of course, other people. Not me. *puts away my own trumpet*)
In 2000, I went to London for the SG2 con and after that, on the mailing lists, discovered that one of the girls from it had also been at the con. We, as well as two others from the list, all met up at SG3 the following year and did a lot more SG cons together in the years since. We don't meet up as much any more but when we do, it's always great fun and like no time has passed at all.
And of course, it was at one of those SG cons that I met my husband! We'll be married 9 years in June and our little girl just turned seven.
So there you have it - the fandom that changed my life.

Date: 2017-01-02 09:23 pm (UTC)Ah... Gotcha. For some reason I thought it was just "name" not "user name" -- now I think of it, for LJ , it's LJ username and I knew I had to drop something, I just dropped too much!!! Thank you!
