The Band Gazebo

Wonderful news!!! Had an orthodontist appointment today - no, that's not it. He had a look at the braces, and declared that there's not much more straightening that can be done with the bottom - well, there is, but that would involve extraction of perfectly good teeth and we've decided against that. Straight is fine, gubby is not.

Therefore, he says, my next appointment will be DeBond Day!!! *jumps up and down* Which is the first day of the Easter holidays, Monday 6th April. Now, that said, I had several false dates for the top debond, so I will not count my chickens until I am in the chair and I see the retainer... at least, I should say, I will not count my chickens tomorrow, tonight I am of the giddy.

smiley_b texted me this morning with a warning of leakage of the Final Cylon on BSG... to wit, I repeat my words of 24 time... spoil me, and be dead to me. And since I'm going to be watching BSG on Sky-time with Himself (who is catching up on everything since he's been home sick) I'd appreciate you all being careful with the cut tags. Thank you!!!

HelsinkiPrincipal's retirement do date has been set for Friday April 3rd. Two from our place and one external have applied for his job. Interviews are next week. I am holding out hope that he will change his mind, but it does not look likely. *wails just a bit more* The kids still have no idea, and I'm not sure how it works... I imagine that a walk around the school will be done at some point, with HelsinkiPrincipal and his successor, cluing in the kids, and as M said today, the newHelsinkiPrincipal is going to have to be trained in, so will probably be in training/shadowing HelsinkiPrincipal from midterm to Easter, so the kids will know then... I'm just dreading if it leaks beforehand, because what do you say? You can't tell them it's not true, because it is, and you can't tell then you don't know, because you do, and you don't want to confirm it if no-one else has... 'tis a quandry.

I now have a lower train track and bands. This is not yet sore. However I feel it will be. On the plus side, I did manage to eat my dinner.

Life update... first day back at school after the midterm break went ok. Then came home and went straight to the dentist to get a perfectly good tooth extracted. All done in order to give my teeth/the orthodontist some space with which to work when the bottom braces go on in a couple of weeks... turns out that I have, believe it or not, a small mouth (ok, stop laughing right now!) and my teeth are quite wide, so do the maths on that one... tooth that was pulled had quite a deep socket (yer woman showed it to me and asked me did I want to keep it. Em, no!) and you know what they say about all the nerves being along the bottom jaw? I can believe it... think I'll be stocking up on Nurofen Plus next month.

Still in the parents' house for this week, while work being done on ours... still need to ring up about a phone line (because no phone, no internet, at least until I get broadband, I hope, sorted out.)

Spent lovely midterm break with Karl, including from Tuesday to Saturday actually living in the house.... was great just to potter around and get our bits and pieces together and get the place a little bit cleaner... because lads, I will never admit to being the cleanest person in the world, on the other hand, I will never again let anyone try to tell me I'm dirty. Place looked clean on the surface, but go any deeper underneath it and it was manky... I'm talking grease and dust and ice an inch thick on the freezer.... just filthy. It's much better now, but *shudder*

Have many thoughts about Saturday's Strictly Come Dancing which I'm going to hold off on for the moment as it's a post all on its own...

Loved Sunday night's Torchwood (episode four)...

Back after the tooth operation... all went well, I'm told, by which I believe that the tooth was extracted with minimal fuss (me being completely knocked out, and only talking to the specialist when still extremely groggy, am not much with the details) ... stitches right the way across the top of my mouth (or maybe it just seems this way) ... on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for a week and have to go on Monday to get the stitches out... which puts me on the soft food diet for the next couple of days anyway! Mouth still feels a little funny but no pain and no swelling which is only good..

So, the orthodonist this morning. He's going through all the treatments, all the options and the dangers thereof. Basically maps out everything he's going to do with me over the next two years. Then he takes X-rays, and they have the digital machine on site to do them, so it's instant, yes? And he's going over the dangers, talking about root shortening and suchlike, and he pulls up the x-rays to show me the roots of my teeth, and the mouse does this cool thing where, when you run it over a tooth, it magnifies what you're running it over? When all of a sudden, he stops, and says, "What the heck is that?"

OK, anyone have five other words they'd less like to hear when looking at an x-ray?

So he gets up the other x-rays and checks, and confirms what the first one is showing him. In my mouth, in the upper jaw, lying right between the roots of my two front teeth, there is, and I quote in the best orthodontological language yer man possesses, "a wee little ball of a tooth" -- not a baby tooth, or an adult tooth, oh no. An extra tooth. That never crowned. And has just been lying there, dormant, for 27 years.

Those of you who long suspected I was a freak? Now we have X-ray proof!

Which is all very funny, except for, you know that plan he was talking about? This tooth is a problem. Because if we whack braces on my top teeth, that will cause the roots to move. Which would likely cause them to hit agianst the buried tooth. Which would be bad because it could cause root damage and basically kill my crooked but otherwise healthy front teeth.

To get the tooth removed? This is a possibility. But. It is a buried tooth, buried deep, so it is, in yer man's words, "a fairly medium operation you're talking about" -- which my mother, in her infinite motherly wisdom, has turned into a major operation. It's also an operation that could damage the roots of my otherwise healthy teeth, leading to possible need for root canal, in the worst case scenario, extraction of my crooked but otherwise healthy adult teeth, oh, and did I forget to mention the possible nerve damage that could also ensue???

Long story short? Treatment on hold while he ships my X-rays off to a specialist friend of his, who will probably want to see me to talk through my various options... practicing on the south side of Dublin city, which is a camel hike and a half, where I don't know where I'll be driving too, and will necessitate time off work... (HelsinkiPrincipal, I know I'm leaving early and coming in late a shitload of times because I have all these appointments to go to, but I'm going to need a day off to go to a dental specialist, because of my freakish nature... is that all right???)

Why can these things not ever be simple?

In other news, had my last gum treatment with the dentist today. Which is good, apart from the fact that I'm going to the orthodontist next week, which should not be fun. Also, she had to do a deep filling on one of the teeth, which is as uncomfortable as it sounds... thanking my lucky stars for a high pain threshold, but if she'd drilled any further I think she'd've struck oil.
